I was looking for a book to be my very first read into the subjects of gun history/ gun control etc. Those who commented on Michael Bellesiles book were so critical of him, and so intelligent that I immediately came to Armed America instead and purchased it. I read only five chapters and was very disappointed because in all that time I learned nothing that I didn't already know from common sense. (That, and being born in New England.)My biggest issue is that while Clayton Cramer does indeed successfully refute the inane claims of Bellesiles, he does it in a way that reminds me of two children fighting in the back seat of a car.... "He hit me" "No i didn't", "did too", "did not", "did too", "did not!" ...and the book is consistent and single minded in its repeated refuting of Bellesiles.I was looking for a book that immerses me in the history and the topic and I just didn't get it here. When he does refer to a significant occurrence in history he gives it only a cursory mention to point out that such and such a law was made because of said incident. for example) The Bacon incident. ok, I can infer it was pretty important and probably had to do with unhappy slaves. But ???? Tell me more... what about it????Had this book been called Armed America: a diatribe and response to erroneous claims, than I would have given this book a 5 star rating. But its called Armed America: the Remarkable Story of how and why. I expected what the title implies. It does not deliver. And I will be throwing this book in the trash. Yes, its a good book, yes I respect the author, but its not readable, nor enjoyable.*A word for all you intelligent commenters out there. If you agree with the stance of Cramer and have any reading referrals for me, reply to my comment and I will check out those books. I'm still looking to learn about this topic. I want to be immersed till I smell the waft of gunpowder as I read. I want details, along with my footnotes. Thanks
