Lifting Heavy Things is an accessible work explaining how trauma settles into our bodies and what we can do to heal. Khoudari is an experienced personal trainer with competitive weightlifting experience, and yet her coaching will resonate with someone just starting a fitness practice.Khoudari blends her own experiences with extensive research, which is then summarized into practical advice for reader. I found the thoughtful approach to pacing ideas and activities at each stage encouraging. Rather than being provided all possible theory behind trauma and healing, each chapter invites the reader to pause and reflect. It’s part text and part workbook, meaning you’ll get out of this book what you put in to it.In particular, I found Khoudari’s strategic exclusion of her own trauma a refreshing change. She makes the case that one does not need to disclose the details of a personal trauma in order to be “worthy” of healing and support. Instead, she uses “[ ]” to indicate a reference to her own lived experience without needing to disclose details that are unnecessary for the public to know. In our age of share-everything social media, this paradigm shift allows each of us to own our own stories.Khoudari’s book has helped me reframe me own exercise/movement practice. There is also a detailed recommended reading list, which I’m now using as my own mini-curriculum into learning more about embodied movement and healing.I’ve recommended this book to multiple people: I believe a global pandemic meets the standards of traumatic experience! To that end, just about anyone will benefit from reading Lifting Heavy Things.
