I had this one preordered and was really looking forward to it, but it didn’t quite fit the bill as much as I wanted it to.The story starts with Captain Ash Dalton, son of a Baronet, and his “batman,” Harry West, a London ostler, about to head “over the top” in the midst of World War I. The two have become incredibly close throughout the war, with lots of simmering but unacknowledged feelings. Ash is seriously wounded and then rescued by Harry, and the two are separated until the war ends. The bulk of the book is spent with Ash back on his father’s estate, where West is now a servant, trying to deal with his physical, emotional, and mental wounds, while wrestling with the strict class constraints that keep the two men apart.The historic aspect of the story is very well researched and well written - Britain in 1919 is beautifully realized and informs the story without overwhelming it. Ultimately, however, I found Ash kind of frustrating as a character - lots of angst and raging at the world, not a lot of decision or taking action. He spends most of the book lamenting his situation in life, which is very warranted given the horrific experience he’s been through, but doesn’t make him a tremendously compelling romantic main character. The story sort of sags under Ash’s indecision about his future and I started to lose interest about 2/3 of the way in.This is a great story in many ways - great historical setting, strong technical writing - but the pacing of the central conflict and Ash’s character growth struck me as off. I enjoyed it, and I’m happy for Ash and West’s HEA, but I probably will not read it again. 3.5 stars.Content warnings: Sexual content, graphic descriptions of war and war deaths, PTSD, on-page panic attacks and nightmares, period-typical classism and homophobia
